FINKE 2009 - PROLOGUE6/Jun/2009 - By, Randall KilnerChris Brenton sets the pace during opening Prologue at Finke 2009.The 2009 Tattersall’s Finke Desert Race, Australia’s biggest and richest off-road event, is set to start from Alice Springs tomorrow (Sunday June 7) following today’s qualifying sessions. The 34th running of the annual classic will see some 75 buggies and a mammoth field of 469 bikes and quads compete over 452 grueling kilometres of desert track from Alice Springs to Finke and back over two days. The competitors who are racing for a prize pool of more than seventy thousand dollars, competed today around an 8km prologue circuit in Alice Springs to set starting positions for the big event. Rain on Friday meant the track was in perfect conditions for competition and riders made the most of the good conditions in a bid to secure a high starting position. Western Australia's Chris Brenton (Quad #904) was the quickest of the 55 starters in the quad division. Blitzing the smooth and virtually dust free prologue track in a time of 5:30.89 on his KTM 505SX, which also secured him 25th outright. Second was Aaron Ovens on a Polaris Outlaw 450. Finishing just over 2 seconds behind Brenton with a 5:33.16. Rounding out the top 3 was Matthew Stone's Honda TRX450R who locked in a 5:33.88. 2008 Finke Winner, Paul Smith finished 4th in class and 30th outright on his #999 Can-Am DS450X. "We had a good day today ending up 4th in class and 30th outright. The track was like a highway and I held the Can-Am on the limiter, however I had a moment on the last loop before the finish line, high siding the quad and almost getting spat off the track" said Smith Chris Howard on Quad #926 was also happy with his result of 17th in class. "We only finished building the bike out at Alice Springs at Thursday lunchtime, with the frame coming from the West and the new engine coming from the East. I was stoked with the run around the track today and a big thanks has to go to our crew Pete and Adam for setting up the Can-Am DS450MX so well in the short time frame." said Chris.
