BRENTON DOMINATES DAY ONE AT NATIONALS

19/Sep/2009

Ryan Lancaster’s national title defence is in tatters after a heartbreakingly bad run of luck struck the Yamaha star on the opening day of competition at the 2009 ATV Nationals at a dusty Murray Bridge in South Australia today.

Lancaster was going head to head with arch nemesis on the track, but friend off the track, Christopher Brenton in the first moto before a shock blew on his Yamaha. The resultant chronically bad handling of his machine allowed Chad McKay to close and pass Lancaster but the Yamaha man managed to hang on for third place and the all important 20 points that result brings. KTM mounted Brenton took the race win by 6.7 seconds over Can-Am pilot McKay with Lancaster’s third place making it an all WA podium.

Looking to bounce back from the disappointment of race one Lancaster and Brenton were again going hammer and tong at the front of the pack to again underline just how dominant this amazing pair of riders are on the Australian scene. Heartbreak was again to strike Lancaster though and rule his challenge moot with half a dozen laps still to run a battery terminal broke which left the Yamaha man stranded by the side of the track. Lancaster could only watch as Brenton again ran away with a clear victory in the incredibly dusty conditions.

Chad McKay was second again and set the fastest lap of the race in a sign of perhaps a strong Sunday of competition from the West Australian.

Josh Higson took third place in the second moto to add to his impressive fourth in the opening bout to currently rank third overall in the overall standings with 38 points his tally thus far with Sunday’s three races still to be run.

Brenton’s two wins puts him in the box seat with a perfect 50 points but McKay’s two second place and 44 points clearly signals that he is ready to pounce and take the title if Brenton slips up tomorrow.

Another Western Australian making his mark on the national scene was Luke Gaisford. The teenager has a fourth and fifth place finish under his belt and after day one is an impressive fourth in the standings.

An impressive 17 strong Pro field is boosted by more than 160 riders in the supporting categories to make the 2009 ATV Nationals the biggest ever.

Tomorrow the Murray Bridge circuit will host the second and final day of competition.
